Email is the most used type of communication, but it’s also among the most vulnerable. Hackers are constantly searching for ways to hack your email account and steal your sensitive information.
The first step is to ensure your passwords are strong and unique. Make sure they’re at minimum 16 characters long and include upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.
Another option is to use an email service provider that is secure (ESP). The most secure ones include anti-spam and antiphishing features that automatically search and remove harmful attachments, content, and links before they reach your inbox.
You can also encrypt emails so that you are the only one to access them. This is a good option for email accounts used by businesses where you don’t want employees to be allowed to copy or forward messages. Encrypting messages is similar to locking a box with your public key and private key. If someone gets a hold of an encrypted message, they’ll see text that is distorted.
Do not share your email address on websites and social media. If you need to create an alias, make sure that your real email address isn’t visible. Use multi-factor authentication on all important accounts, such as your email. A compromised account could result in a multitude of other accounts therefore it’s worth the effort.
